Who cares about Beckham’s Maserati? We want his shirt

Words by Rob Chilton

Becks models the ideal summer outfit

Maserati’s Levante Trofeo SUV is a stunning piece of design, but in a new mini-movie starring David Beckham that launched his role as global ambassador, the car was cast into the background by his shirt.

Made by Saint Laurent, the tropical Hawaii short-sleeved number has a beautiful floral design and is made from breathable lyocell that’s perfect for warm summer days. Priced at approximately AED 2,600, the flowy shirt was the perfect outfit for Beckham as he performed stunts in the performance SUV under the freeway in Miami.

As the Italian brand’s new face, Becks smiled while taking the Maserati for a spin, scorching the car’s wheels and doing doughnuts without the need for a stunt driver.

In a behind the scenes clip, Beckham raises an eyebrow and makes a side-glance at the camera as he quips, “This is the first time I’ve done doughnuts… officially.” Climbing into the Levante Trofeo, the Englishman grins, “I’m quite excited about this.”

The father of four is a fan of Italy and spent two happy loan spells at AC Milan under coach Carlo Ancelotti. Gazing at his new ride, Beckham smiles and says, “Everything about this car screams pure Italian.”

The movie shows the ex-footballer holding his phone while his digital assistant reels off a lengthy list of meetings. Beckham decides to skip work and instead takes his new toy for a drive. The advertising agency behind the film, Droga5, said it was Beckham’s “little act of rebellion.”

Beckham will represent Maserati around the world in the new deal. Paolo Tubito, chief marketing officer of Maserati, said signing the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid star signals a “new era” for the carmaker. “The brand is moving forward,” said Tubito. “Maserati is driven to challenge the status quo, being innovative by nature, powered by passion and unique by design. The partnership with David Beckham is the embodiment of all these values.”

Beckham, 45, said, “Maserati is an iconic Italian brand, which shares my appreciation for the very best innovation and design.”
