When are the good PS5 and Xbox Series X games coming out?

Words by Nathan Irvine

Game on?

PlayStation and Xbox fans might not always see eye-to-eye, but they've certainly got a common goal right now - they both want more top games. The PS5 and Xbox Series - the all singin', all dancin' new consoles - have been starved of good games since they launched more than seven months ago. And although E3 has been and gone, most of the great games there are slated for 2022. So when are the good PS5 and Xbox Series X games coming?

The calvary is coming... slowly

The good news is that fun times are just around the corner. 2021 will see a slew of great games released for both PS5 and Xbox Series X. However, you're going to have to wait a little longer. Summer months are notoriously barren spells for console game releases. Sure, sure we'll get the latest Madden NFL 22, FIFA 22 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2022 on both consoles, but that's about it. It's from September onwards, that things get big.

Upcoming blockbusters such as tactical shooter, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction and the nostalgia-tinged racing game Hot Wheels Unleashed both arrive in September on both consoles. PS5-exclusive Deathloop - an FPS where you play as an assassin that has to replay his same day over and over again, like the movie Groundhog Day, also drops in September.

October is where things level up. Potential first-person shooter blockbusters is the flavour of the month. Games such as open-world guerilla warfare sim Far Cry 6, four-player horror title Back 4 Blood and Battlefield 2042 that fuses its gunplay with massive game changing tornadoes and sandstorms all release within days of each other. Movie-to-game Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is also due.

In November, the schedule takes a bit of a dip. Well, at the time of writing it does. Confirmed games are a little thin on the ground, but we will see a scrubbed up, super-slick version of Grand Theft Auto V hits both Xbox Series X and PS5. In terms of exclusives, Xbox Series X gets the absolutely gorgeous Forza Horizon 5 this November.

And although December currently only has zombie survival game, Dying Light 2: Stay Human on the current roster, expect some more winter titles to be announced soon.

See, even though things feel a bit bleak now, the games that will really give your PS5 and Xbox Series X a workout are just around the corner.
