The British menswear star talks to EDGAR about style and sentimentality
After graduating from the prestigious London fashion school Central Saint Martins, Edward Crutchley worked at Pringle, before launching his own brand in 2015. Along the way, he's collaborated with Louis Vuitton and Kanye West and picked up two Woolmark Prizes for fashion in 2019. A keen student of fashion, Crutchley places a huge importance on research, tradition and textiles when designing his menswear collections. EDGAR spoke to him about what's hanging up in his closet and his surprising choice of sock brand.
The most worn item of clothing in my wardrobe
I’m living in the straight cut trousers from my summer 20 collection. I’ve got a black and brown pair and – even though I made them, I’m not boasting! – they are super comfy and go with pretty much everything.
The oldest piece in my wardrobe
I have a pair of the first edition of Levi’s twisted jeans that I wore at university. To be honest, they are more holes than jeans now, but I can’t get rid of them.
The colour I feel most comfortable wearing
I feel happy in any colour. I do tend to have a base of black, brown or navy but it’s fun to wear something bright and I think colour helps lift your mood.
The most sentimental thing in my wardrobe
Oh, everything! I can’t throw anything away, ever. As a result, I have so many clothes that I never wear but love and need in my life.
The accessory I never leave home without
I cannot travel lightly, even to the office, so I always have a backpack on.
The most outrageous thing in my wardrobe
I don’t believe clothes can be outrageous. Well, not my clothes! I like to be covered from head to toe.
The most expensive thing in my wardrobe
I was given an original Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McClaren ‘Witches’ collection sheepskin coat. Probably that.
The cheapest thing in my wardrobe
Uniqlo socks. I don’t wear any other type.
The smartest thing in my wardrobe
The thing that makes me feel smartest is a wool donkey jacket I do in every winter collection. The fit is just perfect on me and makes me feel like I look great.
The thing I have most of in my wardrobe
Tailored trousers. I don’t wear jeans because of the amount of water it takes to make them so I have quite a variety of wool trousers.
The most beautiful fabric I have in my wardrobe
Now, that is a difficult question! If I had to choose one it would be the handmade Japanese ikat I made while I was working at Louis Vuitton, which had entwined flowers on the red base and colour specially tied and dyed by hand. It took six months to make!
