UFC "Fight Island" to return to Abu Dhabi soon

Words by Nathan Irvine

Don't call it a comeback

UFC president Dana White has suggested that Fight Island could return to Abu Dhabi in the near future. Following a mandate in the USA that means all international fighters flying in to the country must be vaccinated against COVID-19, White claimed that the UAE capital just might play a huge role in the MMA show's future.

Dana White told assembled journalists, including MMAfighting.com, "I said I have no idea how all this nuttiness is going to play out, but here we go. We’re gonna - I don’t know. I think ‘Fight Island’ is going to be hopping again."

White who is flying into Abu Dhabi soon for UFC 267 says he's going to find out more when he arrives.

“Yeah, we’re looking to do more events (there). I’m going to Abu Dhabi next Wednesday, so I have a lot of meetings out there." White continued, "I’ve been dying to walk you guys through what’s been going on in Abu Dhabi anyways, so this trip I’ll get everything done, buttoned up and finished and I can come back and walk you guys through it.”

A rematch

For those out of the loop, Abu Dhabi has strong relationship with the UFC. So much so, that during the height of the pandemic, certain parts of Yas Island were closed off to the public so a weekly fight cards could take place in isolation. It was a huge triumph for the promotion as it was one of the first sports to cash in on pay-per-view buys when all other sport had closed down.

Whether or not fans will be allowed to watch the bouts this time around is another question. But as the daily coronavirus cases have dropped below 200 recently - and if they continue to do so - there just might be a scenario where UAE fight fans can watch the bouts. We'll keep our fingers crossed.
