Serapian’s leather experts can make the impossible come true

Words by Rob Chilton

Artistry and craftsmanship come together in this Milan studio

Serapian’s bespoke atelier is housed inside Villa Mozart, a beautiful Art Deco landmark in the heart of Milan that was designed by renowned architects Aldo Andreani and Piero Portaluppi. Striking and elegant, the building is an ideal setting for the work that goes on inside.

Men’s backpack from Serapian

Giovanni Nodari, bespoke manager and a member of the Serapian family says clients who want a bespoke piece are first taken into the bespoke salotto, “a room filled with old-world charm and an eye-catching mosaico design piece, intricately made with 1,000 small leather tassels in a kaleidoscope of colour.”

Awaiting clients is the largest collection of Italian leathers in the world, housed in drawers surrounded by a rose marble fireplace. “With passion, insight, and expertise, we familiarise ourselves with the clients, understand their personalities and interests to better guide them in the choice of their bespoke experience,” says Nodari. The choice is bewildering: any item can be customised using a palette of more than 500 colours and kinds of leathers. A frequent request from men, reveals Nodari, is to match the colour of the bag with their watch strap or car.

Craft in action

“Once the ideas are finalised, the sketches are sent down to the Bespoke Atelier on the ground floor where the artisans – specialised in the mosaico craft – bring each creation to life,” he adds.

Unsurprisingly, such complex work requires a long training process. “Our master artisan has been crafting our iconic mosaico craft for over 20 years and is always accompanied by an apprentice to support her and pass this historical craft to the next generation,” says Nodari.

Personalisation options are many

Serapian clients, Nodari explains, are “connoisseurs who are always on the lookout for the finest in every aspect.” But for the truly picky, the ‘assoluto’ experience allows people to request unique pieces. Nodari gives examples such as a rifle bag in a customised leather and, most recently, the interior refurbishment of a 1930 Lancia Dilambda.

“Serapian’s master artisans are always ready to challenge their crafting abilities with astounding demands, says Nodari.
