Sandqvist bags from Sweden arrive at The EDGAR Store

Words by Rob Chilton

New on The EDGAR Store

If you were to draw a Venn diagram that showed the design philosophy of bag experts Sandqvist, their lusted-after backpacks would sit beautifully in the intersection between practicality and style.

The Swedish company founded in 2004 by brothers Anton and Daniel Sandqvist and their friend Sebastian Westin, make uncluttered, user-friendly bags in sophisticated colours, using sustainable materials that are both durable and pleasing to the touch.

Now available at The EDGAR Store, we spoke to Westin – co-founder and brand director – to learn more about this versatile collection of men’s accessories.

What do you believe a Sandqvist bag should do for the person using it?

SW: We think it should offer the freedom of a functional bag with great design. We want the bags to be used for hiking, running or the office, but you should also be able to take it with you afterwards for dinner or drinks with friends.

The bags are very clean and simple in their design – why do you not add more pockets, buckles and flaps?

SW: We like to keep it simple and not have features for the sake of it. All features should be functional or add great design value to the bag.

The Johannes backpack features cool colour pairings. Where do you get the inspiration for these colour combinations?

SW: The Nordic nature is our main source of inspiration and we draw on the natural environment when deciding on colour palettes for the collections. Our aesthetic is quite minimal and Scandinavian, but more important than design philosophy are the Nordic landscapes where we find most of our inspiration.

Do the design team test prototypes before they go into production?

SW: Yes, we always test the bags first and give them to our staff to try out and give us feedback.

What’s the story behind the name Sandqvist and the patch on the bag?

When the first bag was made, Anton stitched it in his basement on an old industrial sewing machine. He needed a label of some sort and he found those little labels he used to stitch into his kids’ clothes for kindergarten!
