Intelligent and analytical, it’s like having a sports scientist on your wrist
Some smartwatches speak to you like an American high school cheerleader. Walk 1,000 steps and they yell, ‘Way to go!’. Swim a few lengths and ‘You’re awesome!’ pings from your screen. Finish a boxing class and you’ll be told, ‘Wow, you’re on fire’ (with a fire emoji, naturally).
Montblanc, however, opt for a far different coaching philosophy – think stoney-faced Ivan Lendl when he was mentoring Andy Murray for example. After workouts on its new Summit Lite smartwatch, Montblanc offers tips such as: ‘Your body energy is good. Leave time to unwind before bed.’ Or: ‘This kind of activity promotes good health even though it actually decreases body energy.’ Or how about: ‘Low sleep score last night reduces your training readiness, but you are ready for moderate cardio.’ It’s like having a sports scientist with a laptop full of data wrapped around your wrist. Areas such as recovery rates, sleep patterns and training load are all analysed to help you exercise in a smarter way.
Presented clearly and logically, the detail is superb and is ideal for those on a fitness kick. However, a spelling error on one tip suggesting we eat more ‘vegetables, fish and diary [sic] products as they can improve sleep quality’ wouldn’t impress Ivan Lendl.
Style fanatics will be delighted with this handsome watch, especially if you choose the jet black model with a black fabric strap. It’s comfortable and light, as you would want in a sports-minded smartwatch, but it doesn’t feel flimsy. Battery life is okay, but the Summit Lite can struggle, especially if you keep it on all night to record your sleep – another fascinating feature, it must be said, that tracks REM sleep, light sleep, deep sleep and wake ups with an easy-to-read bar chart.
Playing around with the watch faces is fun. Choose a vintage dial from Montblanc’s 1858 range, or its renowned Starwalker chronograph and people might not realise you’re wearing a smartwatch. Alternatively, go down the data route with a technical readout of numbers, coloured rings and heart rate indicator. Whichever you opt for, it’ll be a crystal clear indicator of your activity and health – with no squawking cheerleaders.
