NFL billionaire installs IMAX on superyacht

Words by Rob Chilton

Dan Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins, has made nautical history

The world’s first floating private IMAX cinema on a superyacht has arrived. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Snyder bought the 93 metre superyacht for around $130m but the cost of installing the IMAX theatre was estimated to be in the region of $3m. “He wanted an IMAX, that was his main request,” Jan-Bart Verkuyl, chief executive of Feadship’s Royal Van Lent shipyard, told the Guardian newspaper.
  • The IMAX has 12 seats and is split across two levels. The yacht also boasts two 8K HD TVs, a helipad and four VIP suites.

  • According to naval architect Ed Beckett at Burgess, the British yacht firm that designed Lady S, soundproofing was an issue. “You couldn’t have sound from the IMAX drifting into cabins next door and, more importantly, you couldn’t have the sound of the engines or vibrations coming into the IMAX. If they did we would not get the certification from IMAX – and that was the most important thing for the owner.”
  • Snyder likes his toys: as well as Lady S, he also has a private jet called Redskins One.

  • Snyder bought the Redksins in 1999 for $800m. They had a dismal season in 2018, finishing 7-9 and missing the playoffs under coach Jay Gruden.
  • Snyder, 54, is worth an estimated $2.3 billion, after making his fortune in marketing. At 31, he became the youngest CEO of a company on the New York Stock Exchange.
