Virgil Abloh continues his love affair with basketball
Being a teenager growing up just outside Chicago in Rockford, Illinois in the late 1990s meant there was no escaping Michael Jordan for Virgil Abloh.
Louis Vuitton’s creative director was obsessed with the Chicago Bulls, going to games with his dad and wearing Nike Air Jordans and his 23 jersey.
“I would only wear Nike and Jordan shoes as a kid, I wouldn’t be caught in anything else,” says Abloh. “It was the sort of cultural equity of the time. His style transcended lifestyle. This was before I was into fashion, so I could say the way that Jordan put his style together, he was a first sort of fashion icon for me on and off the court.”
Abloh has now released another collection of NBA clothing and accessories for Louis Vuitton that’s inspired by the golden 90s decade when Jordan ruled basketball. Considering Abloh’s adoration of that particular era, it must have felt like a layup for him.
