Iconic cars receive the Breitling watch treatment

Words by Rob Chilton

Three chronographs for a trio of classic sports cars from the 1960s

Beloved American cars from the golden age of motoring design – the Chevrolet Corvette, the Ford Mustang, and the Shelby Cobra – have each been assigned a new Top Time watch from Breitling. Here’s the lowdown.

The timepiece trio

CHEVROLET CORVETTE

  • Red dial
  • Car logo at 12 o’clock
  • Power reserve of 42 hours
  • Black tachymetre
  • Caliber 25 movement
  • Three black subdials
  • 42mm

Breitling say: The second-generation Chevrolet Corvette, distributed from 1963 to 1967, is the most sought-after version of this American legend. The Sting Ray took inspiration from a 1959 racing-focused prototype.

SHELBY COBRA

  • Blue dial
  • White racing stripes
  • Car logo at 6 o’clock
  • Power reserve of 42 hours
  • White tachymetre
  • Caliber 41 movement
  • Two white subdials
  • 40mm

Breitling say: In the early 1960s, the Le Mans winner Carroll Shelby imagined a car that combined British chassis design with American racing engineering. He created the Shelby Cobra, a sports car that ingeniously matched a small, light chassis to a strong, reliable American big-block engine.

FORD MUSTANG

  • Green dial
  • Car logo at 12 o’clock
  • Power reserve of 42 hours
  • Black tachymetre
  • Caliber 25 movement
  • Three black subdials
  • 42mm

Breitling say: The first-generation Ford Mustang, produced from 1964 to 1969, was compact, affordable, and sporty. With some models suited to families and others ideal for race-focused sportsters, it was a true icon popular among rock stars and actors and featured in some of the era’s most popular movies.

“It’s about the journey, not the tempo. And that’s true whether you’re tinkering under the hood or hitting the road for a Sunday ride celebrating these beautiful machines,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern.
