Continuing a range that started in the 1980s
High-end horology isn’t always a serious business. Legendary watch designer Gérald Genta – the man who created the iconic Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus as well as watches for IWC – was responsible in the 1980s for a series of watches released by his own company that depicted favourite Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy.
Production on these beloved models stalled but then returned in 2019. Now, in 2021, the Gérald Genta house – which is now owned by Bulgari – has unveiled the new Arena Retrograde Mickey Mouse timepiece.
Announced at Geneva Watch Days, the eye-catching watch is limited to just 150 pieces. Mickey’s arm tells the minutes on a 210-degree sector of the watch’s dial, while hours are displayed through an aperture at 5 o’clock. Equipped with a 41mm steel case, the playful watch comes on a red fabric strap.
Genta, who died in 2011, founded his company in 1969 and obtained a licensing deal with Disney in the 1980s, which is continuing to be a smart business move. The highly collectable watch is available for sale now, priced at AED 66,000.
