Lewis Hamilton and US design icon Tommy Hilfiger continue their bromance with a new outdoorsy menswear collection for the autumn season
Tommy Hilfiger and Lewis Hamilton have driven off-road for their latest menswear collaboration. The Tommy X Lewis range for autumn sees the American design giant and the five-time Formula One World Champion produce a string of elevated trail gear pieces including tracksuits, lumberjack shirts, rugby jerseys, and a key item: the urban hiking boot. Warm tones of burgundy, navy and red blend nicely with plenty of cream and white.
The collection hits stores and online on September 2 but a logo T-shirt and trail boots are available for pre-sale on August 20 and August 27 respectively. The ‘LH’ logo, meanwhile, has evolved into a minimalistic black square.
For Hamilton, the FW19 range continues the driver’s love affair with fashion and the people who create it. “I’m fortunate to have friends who work in the fashion industry, and I’m constantly fascinated and amazed by their creativity,” he says.
Hamilton, who currently leads the World Championship ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, calls Tommy Hilfiger “an iconic American brand that was impossible to miss as a kid, whether you were into fashion or not” and is impressed by the man in charge. “I’ve always admired how Tommy never gave up on his dreams of building a global lifestyle brand, even when times were tough. I believe that when you get knocked down, it’s not how you fall that matters, but how you get back up, and Tommy and I both take life lessons away from these moments.”
With increased exposure to fashion as he’s got older, Hamilton’s confidence with his style sense has grown. Becoming friends with fashion designers – Tommy Hilfiger himself being a key connection – has also helped boost his knowledge. “I feel more confident about experimenting with different styles, and just being myself,” says Hamilton.
Citing Pharrell Williams as his style icon, Hamilton says his own style never stays still. “It’s always evolving, that’s what’s great about fashion,” he explains. “I see new designs that push the boundaries and I love mixing street-styles with high-end luxury brands. Why wear the same as everyone else? Fashion is about experimenting and men should be confident about trying out new things. Don’t try to be someone else – whatever you chose to wear, do it with confidence.”
