Dubai’s first Motorcycle Film Festival rides into town

Words by Rob Chilton

Three-day event celebrates life on two wheels

Arnie in The Terminator, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda in Easy Rider, Bruce Willis in Pulp Fiction, Steve McQueen in The Great Escape, Brando in The Wild One, Gael García Bernal in The Motorcycle Diaries… movie stars and motorbikes have been happy collaborators for decades.

Now, this special relationship is to be celebrated at the first Dubai Motorcycle Film Festival (DMFF) in February, which will showcase more than 30 motorcycle-themed films from around the world.

Held in association with Honda Motorcycles UAE, the cultural event promises to “screen the best dramatic, documentary and short films that reveal the passion of riders and the soul behind riding motorcycles.”

For example, Fast Eddie profiles the enthusiasm of 94-year World War II veteran Eddie Fisher who still rides every day; Rebel Riders spends time with Vespa fanatics in Indonesia; while Blenio, Utah focuses on the land speed record attempt of a young man from Switzerland.

In addition to the curated line-up, films of various lengths and styles submitted by amateur filmmakers will be shown at the three-day event at Warehouse Four in Al Quoz.

Awards for Best Dubai Film, Best Overall Film, Best Documentary, Best Short Film (under 15 mins) and Best Short Film (over 15 mins) will be handed out by a panel of local and international motorcycle, media, and film industry professionals. A Viewers Choice Award will be decided by audience votes.

DMFF director and partner at Warehouse Four, Ian Carless says the festival is the result of a growing motorcycle community in Dubai. “The last five years have seen the popularity of motorcycling skyrocket,” he said. “More people than ever are taking to two wheels which has resulted in a huge variety of motorcycle-inspired video content.”

The DMFF runs February 25-27; entry only for those over 12 years of age; tickets AED 50
