Cadillac isn’t the first name on people’s lips when it comes to car manufacturers with a rich racing pedigree. But since 1949, the US automobile maker has been building four-wheeled bullets that have competed in GT championships and much more. Well, not just compete… it actually won a bunch of events too. Cadillac actually has a remarkable racing history. And one that has made it into the latest line of its 2022 Blackwing models.
Both the CT5-V Blackwing and CT4-V Blackwing have been fitted with the very last petrol-powered performance engines before embarking on its all-electric future. To say that they’re going out with a bang is an understatement. The CT5-V is the fastest sedan ever made. Yes, ever. It will propel you from 0-100 km h in just 3.6 seconds – that’s just 0.2 seconds slower than a standard Lamborghini Huracan.
The new Cadillac Blackwings are so fast, that we were invited to push them to their limits at the Dubai Autodrome race track recently.
Although they’re both full-sized, 5-door family cars with plenty of room inside, they really can shift. The sense of speed when you plant your foot down on the accelerator is unreal in both vehicles, but the CT5-V Blackwing has an obvious edge thanks to the enormous V8. It pins you back into the seat as it gobbles up the asphalt, which is a moreish thrill as we hit the straights.
It’s not just a drag racing machine, mind, it’s also nimble around corners, chicanes and hairpins. The V6 -powered CT4-V Blackwing is particularly graceful around the bends and handles expertly as we power through the more technical parts of the course.
We pushed both Blackwings harder each time we completed a lap, and were blown away by their willingness to provide us with the white-knuckle thrills. We always felt in control as we dared to go a little faster, which is testament to Cadillac’s racing history and know-how.
Not only are they an ideal option for the odd track day, they’re also a fundamentally sound – and exciting – everyday car for all the family. Both the 2022 CT5-V and CT4-V Blackwings are superb and provide a fitting end to Cadillac’s petrol-powered era.
The 2022 Cadillac CT5-V and CT4-V Blackwings are available in the Middle East from January 2022.
