“But who needs such luxury features in a pickup truck?” asks one of my passengers as I take them for a spin in the 2021 Ram 1500 Limited. It’s a fair question. Why do pickup trucks - which were originally designed to ferry around lumber, bricks and other stuff across tricky terrains - need to be so decadent inside? Well, why not?
You see, as this beast of a truck proves, the pickup truck has transcended the utility vehicle sector and muscled its way into the luxury car market - especially in the Middle East. Sure, you can still use the spacious flat bed to lug camping gear, motorbikes or your weekly groceries, but the cockpit doesn’t have to be a bare basics experience.
For example, this Ram 1500 Limited’s interior has lashings of leather throughout. On the super-comfy seats in the front and the back, across parts of the dashboard and the doors. It feels like stepping into something special. The back seats comfortably sit three grown adults, and the foot space (1.15m) in front of them is ample enough to squeeze a small mattress into. Though, I didn’t actually check this. With so much room, it’s clear to see how the Ram 1500 Limited is a great choice as a family vehicle.
It’s also fitted with plenty of gadgets and gizmos. The centrepiece of its tech is the 12” display in the centre console that’s home to more switches and knobs than your average hardware store. Climate control, heated seats, and seamless connection with Google and Apple devices, it’s verging on the big screen territory that a certain electric car company is known for.

The tech goes much deeper too. From driving to parking aids, the Ram 1500 Limited is eager to please and make your ride as smooth as possible. Its handling makes it feel like a slightly bigger car so you can slalom down highways and through mall car parks with ease, which is not always possible with pickup trucks.
And thanks to the V8 Hemi engine, you get a lot of goosebump-inducing thrills as it roars into life with every press of the accelerator. I drove the Ram 1500 Limited all the way to Ras Al Khaimah for a cycling trip recently with two friends and three bikes. The usually laborious journey flew by thanks to the supreme comfort and ride - something that I thoroughly welcomed after the Jebel Jais climb too.
The Ram 1500 Limited surpassed all expectations. It’s roomy, classy and a joy to drive - the flatbed capabilities almost feels like a bonus. So to answer the question “who needs such luxury features in a pickup?”. Erm, me.
